Dear Sam,

I’m much better, thank you.  I’m at that stage after being poorly when you fully appreciate being able to do all the everyday things that it’s easy to take for granted when you’re feeling well. So, your last post about the benefits of  a simple daily task like making the bed really struck a chord with me.  While I was under the weather, it was certainly therapeutic to make sure our bed was tidy and welcoming and to enjoy the luxury of clean sheets – surely one of life’s simplest pleasures!

Talking of cleaning, I wanted to share with you a new purchase I’ve recently made.   We own our fair share of gym clothes, fleece blankets and bedlinen made with man-made fibres and I was a bit shocked to read recently that materials like these can shed tiny plastic fibres when they are washed. Fortunately, I heard about something that can help and so I’ve just bought a special bag which traps micro-plastics and stops them getting into the waste water.  I’ve been using it for a couple of weeks now and it seems to be quite effective; as long as you don’t over-fill it, the washing machine runs as normal and the clothes come out properly clean.  Any plastic particles that end up in the seams of the bag can just be emptied out into the bin.

Eco-friendly alternatives to chemical products

As well as using the washing bag I’m also trying to use more natural cleaning products around the house.  White vinegar in particular is proving to be surprisingly effective in keeping the washing machine clean and fresh – I just fill the detergent drawer with it and then run a hot cycle.  It also works well in place of rinse-aid in the dishwasher (and, I’m glad to say, doesn’t leave the kitchen smelling like a fish and chip shop!)

Small steps to making a difference

I don’t know if you agree but sometimes I find that the challenge of being greener can feel a bit overwhelming.  It can be hard to know what to do for the best, but I remind myself that small steps will all add up and, like making your bed, a simple action can be a very good place to start.

Much love,

Claire
