Our bookshelf choice for August is Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, by Winifred Watson, published by Persephone Books
Written in 1938, the story begins when Miss Pettigrew is sent to the wrong address by an employment agency. She meets Miss LaFosse, a nightclub singer, and her wonderful day – and the rest of her life – begins.
Heartwarming and great fun, in 2008 it was made into a film starring Frances McDormand and Amy Adams.
Many thanks to Persephone Books for the image of the cover of their Classic edition of the book. DVD image with thanks to English Heritage.
