December 6th is celebrated as St Nicholas’ Day. St Nicholas was a Christian Bishop who was noted for his generosity in helping children, the poor and those in need.

Among the traditions for celebrating St Nicholas’ Day is the giving of gifts in shoes or stockings.  Over time, he has become associated with Santa Claus and the bringing of gifts to children all over the world.
