Have you come across the exercise system known as Pilates? If not, we hope that today’s post will give you a short introduction and explain why it has so many fans worldwide, including Claire, who has been doing pilates for almost 20 years!

The Pilates method…develops the body uniformly, corrects posture, restores vitality, invigorates the mind and elevates the spirit.

Joseph Pilates

First devised in the 1920s, when Joseph and Clara Pilates opened a gym in New York, the exercises are done slowly and smoothly, concentrating on breathing in sync with movements that work both the inner and outer muscles and help promote a sense of wellbeing.

Pilates is for everyone

People of any age, ability or level of fitness can enjoy and benefit from doing Pilates. It’s a great antidote to any aches and pains caused by working from home as the exercises involve the whole body, elongating and strengthening whilst improving balance. Some classes involve going to a studio with special resistence apparatus whilst others are based on matwork with simple equipment like exercise bands, small weights and foam rollers or blocks.

The ballet dancer Dame Darcey Bussell is a good advertisement for the benefits of doing pilates!

If you’re tempted to try Pilates and would like to find out more, there’s a wealth of information online, including introductory videos on Youtube. There are Pilates organisations worldwide including the Pilates Foundation in the UK and the United States Pilates Association. Many have helpful websites with details of classes and events.

Do tell us in the comments if you already enjoy Pilates or if you’re interested in taking it up.

Until next time, stay safe and well,

Claire and Sam
